Thank you for visiting my online gallery.
Transparent refers to the way in which the works shown are priced. This page gives details of the principles behind the pricing.
The valuation of all the work here is based simply on the cost of production. In other words the costings are quantitative rather than qualitative. What is explained here is how this valuation is made. The whys are/will be explored in my ongoing blog openstudioe8.blogspot.com.
The starting point was to find a rate which was appropriate to the work. The rate chosen was based on the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE). The average pay in London is £581 per week. Rounding this off to 580 gives a daily rate of 116. A lecture at art school (the only one I ever had on self-employment) gave a formula which has endured over the years for calculating a daily rate. Essentially a freelancer needs to earn 3 times his salaried equivalent in order to cover overheads and unpaid days (I'm currently look for a received formula which backs this up). This gives a daily rate of (3 x 116) £348.00 – but for simplicity I’ve rounded that up to 350.
The listed costs are based on an estimate of the time taken to produce each piece – this includes an estimate for development and procurement of materials – plus the cost of materials.
Additional costs may be added for framing or delivery if these are required.
